Why Emergency Telecommunication?
911 is a vital part of emergency services in Ontario and the demand of trained professionals is rapidly increasing. An exciting but fast-moving field, emergency telecommunications is the lifeline for emergency service agencies in Canada. As an emergency telecommunication, you will play a critical role in saving lives.
Your training will have a combination of theory and practical scenarios on a Computer-Aided Dispatch System that allows you to highly employable upon successful completion of the course.
What will you study?
- Describe the role and responsibilities of an Emergency Telecommunicator in the emergency services and public safety field. (Police, Fire and Ambulance)
- Identify the goals for effective emergency call-taking and call processing.
- Efficiently gather and verify critical information and meet call-taking and processing goals and ensure quality assurance in all procedures.
- Define ethics, values and three P’s – protocol, procedure, and policy and explain their role in the communication center.
- Use computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, including mapping and recording devices.
- Describe techniques for handling calls from foreign-language speakers, people with speech or hearing impairment, elderly, children and /or callers with mental illness.
- Use protocols to correctly classify calls for law enforcement/police, fire/rescue and emergency medical services.
- Explain legal issues, regulations and legislation that relate to emergency telecommunication.

Course Content
Emergency Patient Care
This course looks at the differential diagnostics of medical, trauma and psychological emergencies. The core of this program gives students a clear understanding of what the body is experiencing while it deals with blood loss, shock and hypoxia. Vitals are a key part of this course and adds to the building blocks of understanding the effects on the respiratory, neurological and cardiovascular systems and how we can have a positive impact to fix this.
Sociology
The most important part of working in emergency services is the ability to communicate effectively, understand social norms and how to relate the persons stresses to the emergency at the moment. Our sociology course helps the student learn coping skills and techniques for dealing with stressful and sometimes chaotic situation.
Medical Legal and Ethics
Understanding the various laws that govern emergency services is key to doing your job well. We will look at policy and procedures that are part of everyday emergency services. Detailed look at the highway traffic act, coroners act and ambulance act are just a few of the discussion points of this course. The ethics element challenges the student to examine how they would deal with emotional and ethical dilemmas that we are exposed to daily
Emergency Telecommunications
This course is the heart of the program and teaches students the principles of dispatch for police, fire and paramedic services. The program is part of the certification through the IAED (International Academy of Emergency Dispatchers). This course teaches students how to call take 911 calls, use the ProQA computer assist program and the science of dispatching.
911 Lab
This lab stresses the didactic portions the students learns in a scenario based setting. Students will use table top exercises’ to manage mass casualty calls, learn the impact of weather and traffic. As part of the lab training students will be tested on mock 911 calls, giving instructions for a variety of emergencies and learning how to multitask.
