Is Paramedic a Good Career in Canada?

There are many types of paramedic careers, including emergency medical technician (EMT), paramedic assistant, and paramedics. All paramedics must undergo rigorous training to become certified.

How long does it take to become one? 

Primary Care Paramedics in Ontario have a minimum of 2 years of postsecondary education and experience as an EMT before being eligible for the paramedic program.

What are the requirements in Ontario? 

If you want to become a paramedic in Canada, you’ll need to be physically fit and have several certifications. To become a paramedic, you need to meet the Canadian National Occupational Standards for Paramedics and pass an assessment. You also need to meet the Canadian Physical Conditioning Requirements. 

While each school’s requirements may differ, basic paramedic requirements include: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with a focus on Science and English courses 
  • Basic CPR and First-Aid certificates (or equivalents) 
  • A valid driver’s license, often class ‘F’ 
  • The ability to meet minimum physical fitness standards  

To become a paramedic in Ontario, you’ll also have to pass the Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant certification examination provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care after you complete your program. 

What is the difference between a Primary Care Paramedic and a Critical Care Paramedic? 

Primary Care Paramedics provide pre-hospital emergency medical care, including trauma and cardiac care. They are typically trained in CPR and first aid.  

They are licensed professionals who provide emergency medical care. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and schools. 

Critical Care Paramedics are specially trained in providing life-saving care to patients with severe injuries or illnesses. They may also be trained in advanced medical procedures, such as intubation and shock treatment. 

They are a type who has additional training and certification in critical care medicine. This training allows them to provide more advanced emergency care to patients in critical condition.
